Hugh Chappelle
A Changing of the Guard -
We are very pleased to announce that Hugh Chappelle has joined Quivira as winemaker, bringing 20 years of unparallelled experience hand-crafting fine California wines.
“Hugh is one of California’s most accomplished and thoughtful winemakers, and we’re very pleased to have him at Quivira,” said winery owner Pete Kight. “He brings a deep understanding of both modern winemaking techniques and traditional methods, and his artisan approach fits seamlessly with our belief in integrating vineyards and winemaking.”
Chappelle comes to Quvira from neighboring Lynmar Estate in the Russian River Valley, where his wines achieved widespread critical acclaim. Prior to joining Lynmar, Chappelle served as winemaker for the noted boutique winery Flowers Vineyard & Winery on the Sonoma Coast.
Earlier in his career, he was winemaker for Madrona Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills, where he focused on Zinfandel, Rhône, Bordeaux and aromatic white varieties. Chappelle did graduate studies in viticulture and enology at U.C. Davis and has a degree in chemistry from U.C. Santa Cruz.
“Quivira immediately impressed me with their philosophy towards both farming and winemaking, and this position appealed to me on many levels,” noted Chappelle. “Quivira wines are vineyard-driven and Pete Kight and his team are unified in their commitment to this ideal. I was also drawn to their organic and Biodynamic farming practices and their interest in a more elegant expression of their diverse range of terroirs. For me, while it’s a return to my original varietal focus, there is no change whatsoever in my winemaking approach of striving for impeccably balanced wines that speak of their origins.”
