Wine Enthusiast September 2009 Issue

90 POINTS - 2006 Quivira Anderson Ranch Zinfandel

Quivira Vineyards is an artisan, family owned winery located in the heart of Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley.  Proprietors Pete and Terri Kight are committed to developing the Estate vineyards and their wines to create the finest expression of the unique terroir of Dry Creek Valley.  Quivira specializes in varietals known to excel in the Dry Creek Valley - including Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc.  Small lots of Rhone Varietals are also produced.

Our artisan wines are produced in small lots, from hand picked vineyards grown and managed on our Estate.  Hands-on attention and dedicated care are focused on growing exceptional quality in the vineyard and allowing the unique characteristics of our place in Dry Creek Valley shine through in the winemaking.  With intimate knowledge of our Estate vineyards, we have adapted our winemaking to best express the qualities inherent in the vineyard.  Our goal with each vintage is to capture and accentuate the luscious, lively depth of flavors that define Quivira's balanced style.

As part of our long term commitment to growing the finest wines of our style in the U.S., Quivira manages all of our Estate vineyards using Biodynamic farming.  Based on our understanding of the prolific ability of vines to draw flavor characteristics from the soil and surrounding terroir, we believe Biodynamic farming results in improved crisp and clear flavors, and a deeper richness that results from the healthier root systems.

We are committed to the sustainable development of genuinely world class Zinfandel and Rhone varietals, and to our Estate and its people.  Since 1998 Quivira has been working in partnership with Trout Unlimited, and State and University authorities, on the long term restoration of Wine Creek as a historic Steelhead and Coho salmon spawning stream.  For the past three years, Wine Creek has indeed once again played a host to the majestic sight of massive Steelhead swimming and leaping their way up the restored stream bed during the spring rains.

Quivira (pronounced "key-VEER-ah!") is home to a team of spirited people who bring a interest in innovation and artistry to Dry Creek's long tradition of winegrowing and winemaking. Founded in January 1981 by Holly and Henry Wendt, the winery was completed in 1987. Tony Castellanos, Quivira's vineyard crew manager, was working in these vineyards even before the Wendt's arrived, and manages a full vineyard staff today.  True to our Rhone Valley focus, winemaker Steven Canter also has full responsibility for all vineyard management.  For Quivira, the winemaking begins with the growing season every year as we strive to capture the finest expression of each varietal represented at Quivira.

Demeter AssociationAfter more than three years of farming organically and Biodynamically, Quivira was just awarded certification through the Demeter Association!  Products bearing the Demeter Association symbol have been grown by Biodynamic® agricultural methods according to very specific and rigorous standards.
